I believe that one should not think too much about nature when painting, at least not during the painting's conception. The colour sketch should be made exactly as one has perceived things in nature. But personal feeling is the main thing.
The theme, or harmony, of a painting can be created by any one of its visual elements. A single colour... repetition of shapes... Light can be a theme.
All paintings are abstract ideas, not representations of a true reality.
By merely increasing or decreasing the amount of contrast in any area we can move the observer through the painting.
The pictures I contemplate painting would constitute a halfway state and attempt to point out the direction of the future - without arriving there completely
Most artists never get a chance to be Picasso, but that doesn't mean you would stop painting.
You have to understand how the human eye behaves when it views a scene for the first time. Work with that knowledge, and your paintings will have more drama and will evoke strong reactions.
When a painting problem crops up, don't rush to fix it. You probably already know one way to fix it, but wait for something else to show up... invite the muses to bring you a new solution.
We have to have the money to do the work we want to do, as well as to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. Fat commissions are good, but not always easy to come by, and each new painting takes its time. So we need to find every way possible to earn extra income from our work.
In every respect, fantasy is like doing abstract paintings.
A part of all art is to make silence speak. The things left out in painting, the note withheld in music, the void in architecture - all are as necessary and as active as the utterance itself.
The masters painted for joy, and knew not that virtue had gone out of them. They could not paint the like in cold blood. The masters of English lyric wrote their songs so. It was a fine efflorescence of fine powers.
On painting and fighting looke aloofe. [On painting and fighting look aloof.]
I don't think money can help you become a better painter, for sure. You can have all the studios you want; it won't help you make a better painting.
It's not about perfection. What's a perfect painting? What's interesting about a perfect painting?
The scope of art is practically boundless; it does not begin and end with the painting of pictures and the modeling of statues; where there is room for workmanship there is room for it.
What is bad painting? Picabia made some deliberately bad paintings, but they were by him, so great in a way.
Content is more than 'subject matter.' It is all the feelings and ideas you bring to your painting.
I paint the way some people write their autobiography. The paintings, finished or not, are the pages of my journal, and as such they are valid.
People are predominant in my paintings. Although they are not obvious, you can feel their presence.
What makes you think painting is any less difficult than brain surgery?
One of Cezanne's unfinished paintings... appears to be a completed work even though only a few strokes of paint have been put down. My methods are similar... I expect each of my paintings to appear whole in every stage.
Pure painting or the art of drawing whose point of departure is based on purely formal criteria is,in my opinion, passé. I do not reject it if other artists make attempts, but as far as I am concerned, this is what I believe. if I do not place a text next to my drawings,I consider the work on such programmes to be futile.
I switched to painting with my left hand to be in better company.
The creative ability of an artist is manifested only if he succeeds in transforming the natural phenomena into 'another reality.' This part of the creative process as an independent element, if conscious and developed, hints at the possibility of creating a painting.
